Theme: Einstein Quote. Yep, that pretty much sums it up.
- 18A — Start of a quote about creativity by 58-Across/39-Down: IF AT FIRST
- 23A — Quote, part 2: THE IDEA IS
- 35A — Quote, part 3: NOT ABSURD THEN
- 52A — Quote, part 4: THERE IS NO
- 59A — End of the quote: HOPE FOR IT
- 58A — With 39-Down, speaker of this puzzle’s quote: ALBERT
- 38D — See 58-Across: EINSTEIN
Quote theme. Nobody’s favorite.
Having said that, I have no issue with this puzzle. I had filled in 95% of the theme letters before I finally got the gist of what the quote was saying, and had a microsecond of satisfaction when I finally got it. That’s the closest to an “aha moment” a quote puzzle is ever going to get.
During the solve, nothing stood out to me as being incredibly weird or bad. MUFTI gave me some fits — I know I’ve seen it in puzzles, but I’ve never really taken the time to learn it. Until now. MUFTI = civilian clothes for military folk. Got it.
Looking back on it, there is some stuff to frown at, but not much. DOT EDU is eyebrow-raising. H TEN, too. DEEJAY, too. I guess I raise eyebrows when things not normally spelled out are spelled out. That’s my own eyebrow cross to bear.
Lots of good stuff, too. The northeast and southwest corners were quite enjoyable. BORDELLO was good. Everything else was just fine.
Jim Horne points out something interesting today: that this is the second Einstein quote puzzle this year (see the other one here). It’s actually the second Einstein quote puzzle on the subject of creativity this year. I feel like that’s ironic, but I don’t want that to come across mean, because I don’t mean it that way. It’s just funny.
Thanks, Steve. You too, Will!
