Awesome Entries: CALVIN AND HOBBES, DJANGO UNCHAINED, JUICE BOX, DADS-TO-BE, OBAMACARE, ASHKENAZI, GOOD CATCH, VETO POWER, INSTAGRAM
Seriously, I must have a lot in common with this Livengood character, and his J.A.S.A. (Jewish Association Serving the Aging) counterparts. This puzzle tickled me in all the right places. Got through it with no errors, no Googling, no crying. And yet, it wasn’t “blow-through-it” fast. Just a nice, leisurely Friday puzzle. Nice.
I don’t have to point out to you how great the 15-letter entries crossing each other are. Both brand new to the Times puzzle, both fun and fresh. Actually lots of fresh stuff in here.
I wonder if ASHKENAZI was a seed entry of interest to the constructors, or if it just fell in naturally (note: the J.A.S.A serves people of all backgrounds! I don’t know the backgrounds of these constructors. Just pondering).
Happy to see OSWEGO making an appearance after about a 2 1/2-year hiatus from the puzzle. It just so happens my wife and I both earned some degrees at the college there, as did Al Roker, Alice McDermott, and ESPN super-sportscasters Linda Cohn and Steve Levy. Jerry Seinfeld attended but never graduated, so he’s basically dead to me.
One last thing: if you haven’t read this hilarious fake menu from Guy FIERI’s very real restaurant, you’re welcome (borrowed from guysamericankitchenandbar.com):
That’s it. Thanks, constructors. I like the cut of your collective jibs.
