Theme: A quote.  This is a quote puzzle.

Theme Answers:

  • 15A — Sign at a neighborhood bar, part 1 : DONT TALK ABOUT
  • 24A — Part 2 of the sign : YOURSELF WE
  • 48A — Part 3 of the sign : WILL DO THAT
  • 58A — End of the sign : AFTER YOU LEAVE

Something Good: The Cluing.  Difficulty (mostly) comes from cluing.  Despite the relative simplicity of this theme type (especially for a Thursday), this puzzle played on the hard side for me, which I like late in the week.  Well-written/edited.

2 27 14

I’m really impressed by this puzzle, because it was actually a very fun (and difficult) solve.  And it’s a quote puzzle, which is nobody’s favorite, mine included.  The quote itself?  Mildly amusing.  But much of everything else really had me going there for a long time.  I had SPARSE instead of SCARCE (1A — Pretty hard to find) for way too long, which led me to wonder if kids might PHONE UP their friends to form teams, or if there really *are* lots of viral videos about the SAT that I’m just not aware of.  Had ABA instead of AMA until the bitter end, which kept AMAZIN (14A — ___ Avenue (Mets’ community website)) from falling into place.  And those are just two examples.  I struggled all around this grid.  But, you know, in a fun way.

No crosswordese, of course.  That’s Stanley Newman’s hallmark.  YELLOWY (22D — Blond) is kinda silly, though.

So, as quote puzzles go, this one was great.  This is how it should be done.  Great job.
