Ed Sessa’s Tuesday, 4/22/14 NYT crossword puzzle (ed. Will Shortz)

Theme: TICK TOCK TICK TOCK TICK TOCK.  Clock crap.

Theme Answers:

  • TICKLED
  • COMMONSTOCK
  • TICKED OFF
  • MCLINTOCK
  • TICKET BOOTH
  • BUTTOCK

Something Good: Sorry, too busy to come up with anything other than BUTTOCK.  Listen, if you’re going to put a single BUTTOCK in your puzzle — *and* it’s going to be a theme answer — you’d better give it a good clue.  “Half moon?” does its job very nicely.

Ok, whatever.  This puzzle is fair enough.  Not a mind-blower, and not super-tight, but I get a TICK-TOCK motif and some sense of swinging, a la a pendulum.  A revealer could have been helpful in tightening things up, but it’s probably just fine. The average solver should be able to get through this and move on with his/her life without much of a fuss.

Sorry for the lateness and shortness — the planets of my life are crashing in on each other this week, in some ways I can share openly (closing on a house this week, for example) and other ways that are just too personal for the blogosphere.

No problem on the late report. Hope the planets in your solar system get back in proper alignment soon.

Puzzle was mostly enjoyable, like listening to a good storyteller tell a joke, except when he got to the end of the story, there was no punch line. I looked for the punch line for more than a minute after finishing, figuring it must be there somewhere. And it just wasn’t. Weird.
